Well there are a few cards I'm not crazy about, too, but I happen to
love the Spy. That is one of the few interactive cards in the game,
and I like how you can thwart someone else by putting their 3 gold or
Throne Room that would be coming up into their discard pile, or leave
their VP card right where it is so it will dilute their next hand. I
think it's a great card. Sure, it can be harsh, especially if there
are no Moats in the game, but that's how it goes. If someone else has
a strong spy network, then you probably should have hired some more
spies yourself, or will have to keep a good set of other cards
available (like Cellars to make use of your VP cards)...

I do think the game could have had a few more interactive and
defensive cards in the initial set. As it is, the Moat is the only
defensive card (though some other cards can help with defense).
Presumably, with something like 500 more cards designed and likely to
come out in expansions for years to come, there will be more
interactive and defensive cards, but I think at least one more of each
of those could have been included to begin with, as well as at least
one more card that would make use of the Curse cards.
