O and the clear answer is.

You only have to play one neutral marker in one row.
You don't have to play the board

In the example I suggested 6 2 5 3

If you throw it again. You can if you want only move the 9 marker that
you played the previous turn

Or start the five and 11 marker one place higher than your colour in
that row.

You can't only take the 5 you have to take the 11 as well

If you had only one marker left say you were playing  6 9. You can
choose to play only the 9 or only the eleven (start it one higher than
your coloured marker); or only the 5 (start it " " " ")

The don't use your markers and keep the white neutral marker is often
used towards the end of the game.
This allows for big climbs as you can make combinations that will only
have you play one number. (instead of 5 11 only the nine)
