Interesting to see so enthusiastic responses in favor of BibDesk! :)
Like some of you, I tried several apps (Papers included) before
settling for BibDesk. That was no later than last January, so it's
fairly recent. What turned me down wrt Papers was the lack of
flexibility, and the lack of transparency as to how things were
handled, rendering it difficult to react in case of troubleshooting.
What I like in BibDesk is that it does what it does the best way
possible. It's not buggy at all, very stable, and very
straightforward to use (apart from the search internet db features
which was hidden at the time). Now, I agree that Papers looks better,
and that it may give the users a feel of control. In this respect, it
seems to me that many people on the list agree to say that BibDesk
could gain from some kind relooking ... so question, given that there
is a strong overlap between the group of developers for Skim, and the
group of developers for BibDesk ..... When will you introduce us to a
new baby? :D
For info, my workflow is as follows: BibDesk (ref hunting, pdf
handling, bib storing) + Journler (<http://www.journler.com> sorting/
tagging of notes and research resources) + iGTD (<http://
bargiel.home.pl/iGTD/> getting-things-done app). The core of the
workflow is Journler which gets info from both BibDesk and iGTD,
using applescript for the former and the built-in url features in the
latter.
The applescript part detects whenever a new pub is added to my main
filed-by-BibDesk publication folder, takes it, creates a new item in
Journler (adding an alias to it), and tags it (the file, not only the
entry) as "processed" to ease troubleshooting, if ever. I posted the
applescript there : <http://www.journler.com/community/forums/
viewtopic.php?t=2440>.
Finally, looking around in forums (e.g., Journler's), it seems that
MANY people are asking for the same integrative app ....
Thumbs up for BibDesk !
