This is printed when there's a connection failure, so it's failing really early on. I'm surprised it's getting an http error, though; I'm not sure why that code path is getting hit. Unfortunately, I can't reproduce the problem, and my traceroute looks similar to yours. Do you go through a proxy server?
I can send a test program with some debug logging enabled if you'd like, since that's about all I can think of at this point. Let me know offlist.
