Aha.  What I was hoping to do was to make Bibdesk's TeX preview generate
a reference in a form that meets (e.g.) Astronomical Journal reference
layout standards, so I can cut and paste it directly into the article
(using an inline bibliography).

I deduce from what you say that the preview styles are hard wired, and I
can't do this.
