I recently purchased new Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires for use on my Trek 7.5 FX Disk and am quite happy with them. I too was concerned about their weight after reading several reviews from others talking about the weight issue. Since this is now my commuter/touring bike (with a brooks saddle) and considering the extra weight of partially to fully loaded panniers and rack pack, I figured the tires are the least of my weight issues not to mention being 30 lbs overweight (at this point). I have been using these tires for about a month now and am quite pleased with them over the Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase 700x32 stock tires I had on this bike. The Bontragers were okay, but the traction was really bad on unpaved hard pack bike paths, gravel etc. and even though they are supposed to be puncture resistant with their "triple puncture resistance", after the second puncture on good roads from a very tiny peice of, I decided on the Marathons. .
I wanted tires with better puncture resistance (after two punctures on the Bontragers) and a little better traction in wet and dry weather especially since I commute through the late fall and early winters here which are mostly wet. After a lot of research, checking with friends who use the same tires on their MTB's this is what I decided on. I have to say that I can only notice a very slight difference, most when initially starting up, but once moving the rolling resistance seems to be quite low as there is very little difference at any speed. The ride is a bit more comfortable though. Without the panniers, rack pack, the bike still feels quite lite and it honestly does not feel any slower or heavier. This year I am planning to commute by bike through the winter, so I will also be purchasing studded tires as we can also get snow and ice from mid to late winter. I have been checking out both the Schwalbe and Nokian tires to try to decide with would be the best suited for the types of winters we get. "Pain is temporary.
