When I wuz a kid, I lived on the same block as my elementary school, and
four blocks away from my junior high school, so I never went to either place
except on foot.

My high school, on the other hand, was several miles away (I lived in the
East Bronx, while the high school was in the West Bronx). On most days, I
walked a few blocks to the bus stop, caught a bus, rode a few miles,
transferred to another bus, and then, finally, walked a few more blocks to
the school.

But occasionally, some neighbors who drove to work would offer me (and some
other kids who went to the same school) a ride. Compared to my usual trek,
this was pretty cushy. One of my neighbors was a taxi driver, so once or
twice I went to high school in a taxi.

On the other hand, I never got a ride FROM school. I took the bus, or the
subway, or I walked. (Of course, when it snowed, I'd walk the whole
distance, barefoot, so I'd have something to tell my grandchildren...)

Those were the days...
