If our cities are ever to have efficient, less environmentally destructive transportation systems, that cycle has to be broken. That means, among other things, that public transport will have to be subsidized initially, and driving is going to have to be more expensive and less convenient. In the long run, that's good for the vast majority of people. It's bad, of course, for the corporate interests which profit from the tremendous amount of money we are forced to spend on the automobile. Good thing we live in a democracy, isn't it?
