I find it facinating that both the northside area where Bob lives and the
Monroe St area have been clamoring for a neighborhood grocery - almost
demanding one.

Don't get me wrong, I am not at all opposed to pushing for local shopping. But
what is interesting is that this is so contrary to the prevailing trend and
conventional wisdom in the US.

Other communities (though not all we now see) are salivating at the prospect of
a Super Wal-Mart or Target+grocery in the sprawl-burgs. Big box stores are
adding full-service groceries to allow people to buy underwear, garden products
and salad fixing at the same place.

We have been told that local groceries can't survive, that everyone goes to the
big stores - which have to be bigger and bigger.

And yet, small but very vocal groups of neighbors insist that they want a local
alternative. They don't want to get in the car every time they need something
to grill. They don't want a mega-trip just to get milk for tomorrow's coffee.
They want a shop that is responsive to the local community.

What are these people thinking?
