OK, I am going to try to bring the discussion back on track and tie the two topics together.

I agree with both Paul and Kathryn that trusting other people to decide if an intersection is safe to cross is a bad idea. One of the reasons I generally don't like riding with organized groups is that drop me at those stop signs. Even if I don't come to a complete stop, I do slow considerably - both to appear to be making an effort at obeying the law and to take a gander at the situation for myself. At that point, everyone else has proceeded on up the road without slowing down, and I'm left waving "bye" to the group.

As to yelling anything while biking, it sort of depends on the necessity. If you lived on a farm, and every single morning, someone yelled something right on the edge of your property, it might tick you off. Many of the roads we ride on are so light in traffic that a Harley, mega-bass, or car without a muffler would also be seen as a noise intrusion. When it happens once in awhile, that's one thing. When there are riders consistently doing it every day (morning workouts Mon-Fri and clubs Sat & Sun), AND there appears to be no reason for the yelling other than to avoid the stop sign, it seems a legitimate gripe.

When I need to pass on information to my riding companions, it doesn't always need to be at top volume. And yelling "CLEAR!" simply signals to all around that you are planning on blowing a stop sign and expect others riding with you to do the same. Nice way to make the folks think you are another rude jerk who doesn't respect the neighbors.
