One of the goals of the Platinum Committee will likely be to get the term
"accident" erased from the traffic crash reporting lexicon in Madison. I'm not
sure exactly how that gets accomplished across the board (staff, reports,
police, media)...but it can't hurt by starting with a recommendation from a
Mayor's committee.

Sidepaths can be dangerous because of the intersection conflicts, yes, but I
think that there is no reason why this particular situation can't be navigated
safely. No, it wasn't an accident...it was a predictable and preventable
crash.

I do have to say, as horrible (and as predictable) as this crash was...it is
coming in really handy for teaching about helmet use during this Bike to Work
Week (and well beyond, I know that I will use this example from this point
forward). I'm really glad that the bicyclist wasn't seriously hurt...we should
ALL think about that next time we forget to wear our helmets or are debating
whether to spend $30 on a new one...

But are we *sure* this was an accident? Sounds like there is a bit of
subjective, exculpative assumption built into the report of this
*crash*......
