I haven't been following this thread very closely...but just wanted to comment on roundabouts. The university is about to install one at Walnut and Observatory.
What I hear is that there are well designed roundabouts...and poorly designed roundabouts. The one that the university will install is ONE NARROW LANE. The thought is that bikes will take the lane while going around and cars have to slow down. What this does is eliminate all of the dangerous turning motions that tend to lead to crashes. For peds...there is an island between every lane...so they are only crossing one lane at a time and only looking in one direction. There's a nice brochure here: http://www.ci.fort-collins.co.us/traffic/pdf/roundabout_brochure-2005-10.pdf I haven't ridden any roundabouts on bike...so can't speak from experience...but the "new" wisdom is that the kind of roundabout designed as above is safer for bike/peds. -Dar __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
