One year ago this month, some wiley DC cyclists
started the Safety Is Sexy Campaign here in DC. It
began with a blog, http://safetyissexy.blogspot.com/,
and eventually co-sponsorship by the Washington Area
Bicycle Association brought about the "You'd Look
Hotter In A Helmet" stickers. These stickers are now
all over parts of the District. The results were a
noticeable increase conversations about helmets, an in
helmet sales (at least at our shop) and, one can
assume, an increase in folks actually wearing them.
Those paying mind to the statistics cited in this
thread regarding those persons least likely to wear a
helmet will be pleased to hear that the sticker
campaign has been quite successful with the younger,
some might even say hipper, more image-conscious set.
I'm quite sure that anyone (or any organization)
wishing to sponsor a run of stickers for Madison would
need only get in touch with the fine folks at the
Safety Is Sexy Campaign.
On yet another side note relating to another corner of
the bicycle-safety world, DC MTB/Cross Racer, blogger
and photographer Gwadzilla has his own personal
campaign to squelch the use of iPods and other music
listening devices by cyclists while riding. In
addition to his belief that cycling offers a great
deal of pleasure to be experienced by all of the
senses, he also cites the (dare I say glaringly
obvious) safety concerns associated with hindering
your ability to hear while riding in traffic. He
hasn't gone the way of stickers or leaflets -yet.
