We do exactly that kind of ride at the beginning of September when new
students arrive on campus. We typically only do two rides (would like to
schedule more), but turn out is usually pretty good (50+); enough so
that we've had to break into smaller groups. What's worked for us in the
past has been to tie the ride into a larger event and let that event do
the bulk of the advertising work. Our event is part of the larger
Welcome Week activities on campus and I think we reach more people
through that than if we were to advertise on our own.

Subject: [Bikies] Advocacy Ride(s)

Are there any thoughts on the effectiveness of hosting an advocacy ride
or several rides sometime this spring?

I was thinking that it might be a good idea to host a ride early on to
give "fair weather" cyclists some safety advice, maintenance tips, &
brief primer on the laws prior to a short jaunt around town or
something. The trick would be to get folks to show up but might be
easier if multiple groups endorsed the event & also contributed. I
suppose it could always be planned around Bike to Work Week or something
but could be it's own event.

Has anything like this been done & if so, was it effective?

Aaron
