Martin, do you have any information as to where he fell through? I rode along the northern shoreline of Monona on Sunday and then across the lake from Olbrich Park to the boat launch N of Monona Terrace on Monday morning and the ice seemed plenty sturdy. However, there was no warning barrier around the power plant discharge where the warm water makes the ice thinner. I simply gave the area a wide berth. Perhaps this is where he fell in? Did he get is bike back?!?

I always check this website for ice conditions before I go out:

Also, as of Monday the lake ice was EXTREMELY SLICK due to that freezing rain over the weekend. Studded tires are mandatory, and owners of commuter grade studded tires (< 200 studs per tire) will have to use caution, though low tire pressure helps considerably. Because of this it actually took me longer to ride across the lake then to just ride on the bike path.

Just had a guy come into Machinery Row who fell through the ice on his

If you're like me and like to ride frozen lakes - I was just out on
Monona on Monday - consider that the conditions right now might not be
as good as they usually are this time of year.
