As Frank points out, and as long-time Madison ice fans know, the MG&E plant discharges warm water into Lake Mendota very close to Machinery Row and the Blount St power plant. Normally, there is a barrier around this area of thin ice and (frequently) open water. Apparently, this barrier is not up at this time.

The snow fence is now up! They must have just done it. The lake is is still very thick so low tire pressure and ~300+ studs per tire recommended!
