As Frank points out, and as long-time Madison ice fans know, the MG&E plant
discharges warm water into Lake Mendota very close to Machinery Row and the
Blount St power plant. Normally, there is a barrier around this area of thin
ice and (frequently) open water. Apparently, this barrier is not up at this
time.

If you are east of Machinery Row and west of ?? BB Clarke ?? you need to be
FAR away from the shore.

Keep in mind that a thick layer of snow can insulate the lake, and actually
keep the ice thin.

Likewise, if you are inclined to ski, walk, or bike across Lake Wingra, you
need to be aware of the spring that enters from the Arboretum. The west end
of that lake can be very dangerous, even when the rest of the lakes have
quite thick ice. (However, approaching the spring from the path in the Arb
is a great place to watch birds hanging out in open water on the coldest
winter days.)

Please be safe when playing on the ice in winter!

Robbie
