Well, I´m also not a huge fan of mandatory stuff but I won´t ride a motorcycle without a bucket nor will I ride a bicycle without one. My personal experience is that the device has saved me (from serious injury) no less than 5 times - one of those times just 2 weeks ago. There´s a big dent in my Bell right about where my temple. My elbow was a mess. My shoulder still isn´t right. My head is fine (although some might disagree - snickers).
I was also raised next door to a neuro-surgeon. When I turned 18 I bought a motorcycle and he paid me a visit to describe what he often had to deal with when people rode on two wheels with no protection. Even here in Brazil the folks who ride a lot for sport won´t go out without the standard helmet/gloves/eye protection. Most city riders (commuters) do not use helmets. I don´t think they should be mandatory any more than I think people should be required to quit smoking but that doesn´t mean either (no helmet and smoking) are necessarily brilliant ideas.
