Personally, I wore a helmet for close to 15 years before one did anything for me. But on that occasion it absolutely saved me a trip to the hospital and possibly long-range concussion effects. I fell sideways and the SOUND of the helmet hitting the pavement left my left ear ringing for days.
Similar here. My teeth hurt for a long time, but my head was fine. All it took was a little wheel overlap while drafting and a slight shift of position of the draftee and forward momentum turned all cranial on me.
I do not favor legally mandatory bike helmets mostly because I think it would be ineffective.
I think that the most compelling argument against compulsive helmet laws for adult riders-- a law that we do have here in BC-- is that they are a barrier to adoption of bicycling. And we don't need more barriers to adoption.
