As a not-so-strong way-more-than-6 year old, I ride a semi-recumbent on the rail-trails regularly. Dunno if it's particularly better than a diamond-frame bike for such trails, but it does just fine, esp. since they're relatively flat. Tires are similar to a typical hybrid; 26x1.5, 20x1.5 with city tread. The one thing he'll have to learn (he'll catch on quick, I'm sure) is not to favor the front brake while turning on the limestone surface; that tends to lock up the smaller front wheel.
So out of curiosity, for a kid's recumbent, what do you have in mind for wheel size(s)?
