My two favorite pieces of bike infrastrucure are: 1) the bike elevator in Monona Terrace -- nice convenience, great view 2) the Southwest Path. It feels like you're riding in the country, even through you're going through a fairly dense neighborhood. I particularly like the bridge along the stretch between Nakoma Road and Midvale Boulevard. I know it's just crossing a storm sewer, but it feels like I'm going over a mountain stream...sort of. ----- Original Message ----- From: "India Rose Viola" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Cc: "amanda white" <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 12, 2010 6:57:17 PM Subject: [Bikies] Seeking Input: Your Favorite Bike-Related Infrastructure(s) in Madison
Hey fellow Bikies, As I was riding along the other day, it dawned on me that if you lived in a different part of the city, you might not know about certain stretches of my commute. Then it occurred to me that each and every bike rider must have their own favorite bike features in Madison, many of which I would be a stranger to. I began thinking of ways we could share our favorite spots or local infrastructure features with each other- but then I decided that it would be even better if we could send them out into the world to be discovered by others. I thought a good jumping off point for this idea-sharing would be to hold a short and mellow bike ride/guided tour in Madison, aimed at the novice cyclist or whatever name-brand you want to give folks who may be on the fence about cycling around town. I am happy to be partnering with the Bike Fed, the City of Madison, and the 20by2020 Initiative <http://20-by-2020.com/> for this event. The ride will serve to showcase a few examples of the "old" (e.g. path and lanes) and "new" (e.g. bike boxes, maps, and bridges) existing as well as up-and-coming (e.g. Regent/Monroe intersection refurb) bike infrastructure and resources that Madison has to offer. The route will be modest, but the number of features that are highlighted and discussed doesn't have to be! Here's where you come in. As self-appointed Bikies, I am seeking your nominations/brainstorms for bike-related features in Madison to discuss or highlight during the ride. They can be spaces, places, views, amenities, historic facts, mapping/route resources, or favorite stretches of asphalt. Send me one, send me many. I'm interested in the commonplace and the esoteric, the straight-and-narrow and the far out. While I can't guarantee that anyone's suggestions will be included during the event, they will certainly be considered and appreciated and perhaps will be the nucleus for another ride or event. I see this ride as less of an event-in-and-of-itself, and more of an opening of an additional channel of communication for folks who need or want to find out more about the existing infrastructure that exists to support their decision to ride a bike around town- be it once a year, once a month, once a week, or every day (of course my bikie bias loves to think of this as a slippery slope). If you are interested, please send me your submissions by Tuesday (Aug 17) at noon. Thanks everyone! -India _______________________________________________ Bikies mailing list [email protected] http://lists.danenet.org/listinfo.cgi/bikies-danenet.org
