Dear City of Madison staff and Transit/Parking Commission chairs,
The recent discussion on the bikies list-serve prompted me to ask explicitly if the city plans to retain all of the existing parking meters, and install rings... such as this: http://www.saris.com/commercial-parking/commercial-racks.html?page=shop.produ ct_details&flypage=flypage_images_commercialParking_norating.tpl&product_id=1 63&category_id=17 (produced locally by Saris) Or these: http://www.dero.com/products/meter_hitch/ (produced in Minneapolis) or these: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/11/cyclehoop-turns-every-street-sign-into -a-bike-rack/ (trialled in London on not just meter posts, but on any round post (streetsigns, e.g.) of a similar diameter to parking meter post, so long as it's in a location appropriate to lock a bicycle). ...so that bicycle parking is not reduced when on-street parking is paid for with the multi-space meters rather than at coin-operated meter heads. It is certainly consistent with the recommendations of the Mayor's Platinum Bicycling City Report http://www.cityofmadison.com/trafficEngineering/documents/PlatinumAdopted0408 08sm.pdf but I'd like to hear from city staff and Transit and Parking that this is actually the plan, that the plan will be implemented, and what the timeline is for implementation. A sample used to reside in the Bike Fed office. My understanding is that something like this will happen in Madison. When I was still on the Transit and Parking Commission, and we were discussing the multi-space meters, we were very clear that the meters were an important feature for bicyclists, and we wanted a way for the number of "bike parking spots" to not be reduced. The Parking Utility agreed that rings would be added to the posts, or at least knobs on the top, to allow bike to continue to be parked there. The rings actually add bike parking, because two bikes can more easily be parked on each post. With a meter, it is tough, though not impossible, to get two bikes locked to the post.
