I biked down to Basco last Sunday on a cool day with a headwind. The contractor was still installing the railings on the various bridge approaches but the Type 3 road closed barriers were pushed aside. The path is descends from Verona Road (the railroad "Summit") to Basco, a negative grade of about 1%. South of Purcell Road on the limestone screenings or gravel portion of the road, the railway bed cuts through the ridge and exposed vertical rock outcroppings line the path.
The gravel portion could use blading so be careful of a few frame jarring potholes. I enjoyed a brew at Mary's Tavern in Basco, a small basement affair with 6' 8" ceilings and biked home, a total distance of about 21 miles. BFW's web site event listing for the grand opening in mid-September said it was 1.1 miles from Cty M to Purcell that was not open yet, not 6 miles. Then there was a request on the bikies list from someone at DNR I think to NOT use the trail for safety and allowing workers to finish their work unencumbered. But hey..winter's coming--so...
