> We car drivers do pay gas taxes.

=v= This factoid shows up every. single. time. I grow weary.

=v= In the early days of the Internet, the FAQ was invented
to deal with questions that were asked over and over and over.
We really need a FAQ that addresses the fact that gas taxes
(and fees, and tolls, and registration) don't even cover half
of the expense of the impact of a car. And that FAQ should
show up at every bike-oriented listserv on the planet, and
maybe even all the newspaper websites that have comments.

=v= People pay a lot out of pocket to run their cars, and
that has the unfortunate effect of fueling a huge sense of
entitlement amongst some motorists, and the flip side of
that is the sense that bicyclists are getting a free ride
and should just shell out more money or get off the roads.
In reality, though, anyone using ANY alternative to the
car is subsidizing motorists, and since bicyclists have
the least impact of all, we are subsidizing them the most.
