I agree. The Madison sign is too complex for quick reading from a vehicle. The
sign is trying to do too many things at once; such as be a info-graphic, civic
promotion, written instruction, and be pretty. None of which are suitable for
instant instruction without latitude for misinterpretation. Madison's sign
should be simple dimple black on yellow (or white). Drivers are deluged with
visual and audio stimulation and distractions. A traffic sign that looks like
an advertisement is going to be disregarded.
My two cents,DJ

I tried out one of the new bike boxes this morning.  I'm a fan of the green and
am glad they switched.  But unfortunately they did not switch their
informational street sign.  The one created by Madison is ineffective, hard to
read, and ugly.  It's a graphic better suited for a reading brochure instead of
a street sign.  I wish the city would adopt a better one that easily tells
drivers & bikers what's up.

Madison's bike box sign:

red is now changed to green)

A better idea:

Hi Aaron.

Green was the widely accepted color for bike boxes before Madison decided to
experiment with red. Recently the Federal Highway Administration began allowing
the use of green in bike lanes and boxes without having to apply for
"experimental" status and requested that Madison change their boxes to green.
It looks like green will be the official on-street color nationally for bicycle
facilities (which makes some sense given the long-term use of green for bike
route signs).
