I had the same problem at the Burger King on East Wash back in 2002. My
wife was pregnant, and wanted a whopper. The fastest way to get there was
on my bike, so I rode there, then tried to use the drive through. They
told me "no motor, no license plate, no service". I discussed this with the
manager at the time and he told me it was a safety threat (even though
parking in the racks would mean I would be crossing the drive-thru traffic
around a blind corner when I left), and that they were concerned about
robbery (because they can't identify a bicycle as easily as a car), and that
it was called a "DRIVE"-thru lane for a reason (he exaggerated his
pronunciation of "DRIVE" to emphasize the point.). I waited 40 minutes
inside for my wife's whopper as dozens of cars went by using the
drive-through. Needless to say, my wife was not happy when I returned home.

The next day, I contacted the police and they agreed with the manager! They
told me it is in fact difficult to ID a thief on a bicycle because most
people aren't familiar with makes and models of bicycles as they are with
makes and models of cars. They also agreed with the manager's concerns for
my safety.

So the next week, I sent a letter to the manager of the burger king, telling
him I would be dropping by the drive through in daylight (to avoid a safety
issue) on my bicycle at a specific time. I included a scanned copy of my
driver's license to address the theft concerns and a picture of me and my
bicycle, the make and model clearly spelled out, and the city registration
tag. I told them that by not offering drive through service to bicyclists
(who generally have larger appetites), they would be missing out on a stream
of customers that would grow when the bike lanes were installed.

When I got to the drive-thru at the appointed time the next week, the
attendant told me I had to park my bicycle and come in the store. I told
the attendant I had forgotten my bike lock, and didn't feel comfortable
parking my bicycle there without a lock. The attendant told me again to
park my bicycle. I asked them if they had received my letter addressing
their concerns. But I got no response. They told me they would call the
police if I did not leave immediately.

So yes, they are unreasonable assholes. And I just re-sent this to BK as
well.

Subject: [Bikies] drive through lanes

I am curious what others may think of this.

I ride everywhere, have not taken a bus in over 6 months, and used green cab
only for doctor apointments when I had celulitis in my foot and couldn't
walk for a few weeks. I use the drive up window at my bank all the time,
winter, rain or shine. Never had a problem.

Last Saturday night I was riding and went to Burger King on E. Wash. after
finding the inside closed I went to the drive through and was refused
service because I was not in a motorized vehicle. They said it was an
insurance issue, and asked what if I was hit by a car?

I replied that I have a tail light, headlight, and ride in traffic all the
time, no problem. They threatend to call the police. I told them that they
should, and then the manager came out with another employee and tried to
"reason" with me. I am sorry to say that after all this I was getting mad,
and because there was some poor guy in a car waiting behind me all this
time, I called them assholes and left.

So, does anyone else have a problem with this? I used to ride a motorcycle
and go through the drive through all the time, no one ever refused me
service.
