And here is my 2 cents: After 16 years of riding a fixed gear I find myself able to stop without putting my foot down almost all of the time. However, I have recently decided for that at 2, 3, and 4-way stop signs and pedestrian right-of-ways, as a courtesy to the other road users, I should put my foot down as it indicates to the other road users that I am at a complete stop. It took me a long time to realize that when I stop without putting my foot down, approaching cross traffic has to guess as to whether or not I am really stopped or not.
