I didn't know whether it was law or not at the time. However, I didn't think that requesting a copy of the relevant statute from the officer would have worked in my favor. ;)

A few years back one of your local officials (mayor, maybe?) had a row with a biker which wound up with the biker implanted in the rear end of the official's car. Lawyers were called, etc. For a while after that Fitchburg cops were stopping bikers regularly for piddly perceived offenses. I was stopped for not putting my foot down when stopping at a stop sign when turning onto CTH M.
