I lived in the D.C. area prior to moving here.

In normal times Madison had the advantage of more consistently cold
temperatures, which avoided the thaw and freeze cycle that makes roads and
sidewalks so perilous. D.C. would get snow, which would melt, then freeze,
making for awful conditions.

This winter we've had the pleasure of constant up and down jags in
temperature and, recently, frequent precipitation of every variety. So our
usual advantage has been nullified.

Still, there are no palm trees in D.C. 33 degrees with wind and rain can
be bone chilling.
