Is there any word when we'll have a paved path all the way from the

every time I ride past.

Good question, Zack! I checked with our interim city engineer today to get up-to-date information.

The City of Fitchburg is connecting McKee Rd with the Verona Rd south frontage road with two new streets this construction season. Spoke Dr will generally head east from the frontage road through the former Harder wholesale grocery building, intersecting with Sprocket Dr, which will go north from McKee near the current Thermo-Fisher private driveway. The gravel area on the Military Ridge Path between the bicycle interchange and McKee Rd is where Spoke Dr will intersect with the path.

The intersection of Spoke and the path will be grade-separated, with the path in a tunnel under the road and access paths on each side of Spoke connecting the Spoke bike lanes with the path. The path will be closed from time to time through the construction period when it is unsafe, while the tunnel and road are constructed. At other times, it will be open, but the gravel surface may be unsuitable for road tires. Hikers and mountain bikes should have no problem. When that segment of the path is closed, path users will be directed to detours by the Badger State Trail and McKee Rd or by the Capital City State Trail.

Spoke and Sprocket Drs and the Military Ridge Path, including the tunnel and the controversial south-side access path at the new McKee Rd bridge, should be fully open for users in mid-October. The path is planned to be plowed for winter use, so hardy riders will be able to use it yet in 2014.

Interim City Engineer Ahna Bizjak will receive a copy of this notice, and if I got any of it wrong, I'll provide an update.
