Tony, I’m not surprised to hear that you’ve already considered the possibility of a temporary crossing of Starkweather Creek. I’d assumed that the cost of a temporary crossing was as much a barrier as the space to locate it, if not more. But if the primary obstacle is lack of space between the RR ROW to the north and Olbrich/culvert to the south, then what about using the existing at grade crossing of the RR tracks at Garver Feed mill to route path users north of the tracks?
From aerial photos it looks like it might be possible to put a temporary creek crossing in line with Hargrove or Richard St, allowing path users to continue east to Walter St (where they’d need to connect anyway to continue east past Walter St). Unfortunately we are only working with a 25-foot wide corridor, sandwiched between the railroad property and Olbrich Gardens. East of the creek there is a major drainage channel immediately next to the path on the Park side, and west of the bridge is the fenced Olbrich Gardens. There is barely enough room to build the new bridge, let alone maintain a temporary one beside it. I just don’t see any alternative to using Atwood or Hargrove to OB Sherry Park and across that bridge to Fair Oaks. We’ll probably mark a detour through OB Sherry, but I suspect that many will use Atwood. Seems to me that the Corps of Engineers and engineering companies use them all the time. Is this something that was discussed. Always seems like bicycle pathways are closed with little thought about how to provide reasonable solutions to the consequence for bicycle commuters. Short version: we are reconstructing and widening the Cap City Path from Marquette to Dennett and replacing the bridge over Starkweather Creek. Main downside: we have to close the path this summer for a couple months. With the bridge out, we don’t have much choice.
