Tony et al, here is what I think: During the time that a highly utilized stretch of the Capital City Path is closed this summer for Starkweather bridge reconstruction there should be a temporary *useable* bike lane striped in both directions onto Atwood. It's unsafe to bike on Atwood in any other configuration.
And since a major stretch of Atwood is going to be resurfaced in the nearish future it would be a great time to test how much bike traffic would use Atwood if it felt safe for people riding bicycles. As a side benefit, narrowing the roadway would encourage people driving cars to obey the 25mph speed limit as well. Atwood from Cottage Grove to Buckeye Rd. should very seriously be considered as a promising candidate for a protected bike lane. The Cap City Path is a great multi-use path, but it is not a replacement for being able to bicycle along that stretch of Atwood Avenue. Build it, and we will bike.
