Jack, just to clarify: You're talking only about the turn signal SOUND, not the turn signals themselves, right?
My two cents: The turn signal sound is noise pollution in an urban environment, and I don't think there is solid scientific evidence of a safety benefit (If somebody is aware of good studies, I'd be very interested). At worst, they can lead to risk compensation -- something that I've definitely noticed with regard to the reverse signals on commercial vehicles: "Oh, my truck is beeping loudly. So I don't _really_ have to check if there are pedestrians behind my vehicle."
