Jack, just to clarify: You're talking only about the turn signal SOUND, not
the turn signals themselves, right?

My two cents: The turn signal sound is noise pollution in an urban
environment, and I don't think there is solid scientific evidence of a
safety benefit (If somebody is aware of good studies, I'd be very
interested). At worst, they can lead to risk compensation -- something that
I've definitely noticed with regard to the reverse signals on commercial
vehicles: "Oh, my truck is beeping loudly. So I don't _really_ have to
check if there are pedestrians behind my vehicle."
