So, um.... What's the bike lane situation going to be? They are getting rid of the center turn lane? Many driver never seemed to understand it anyway, but at least it got drivers out of the flow of traffic when they were turning left. Now things are just going to be more congested.
Are bikes now going to share the lane with impatient, out of town drivers coming and going from campus and the Kohl Center? I hope that the shared parking and bike lane is going to be significantly wider than the one farther east on the 400 and 500 blocks of Dayton. There I mostly ride in the main traffic lane to avoid opening car doors and clueless people exiting driveways. That's probably what I'll do in front on the Kohl Center as well if the lane isn't wide enough. The buses make me do that anyway, so now I guess it will be all the time. Dayton is an incredibly important bike route. This is NOT the way to make the city better for biking. And, not to put too fine a point on this, but the city committee that deal with both bicycling and motor vehicle use of city streets and unpaid parking (but not paid on-street parking) -- the Ped/Bike/Motor Vehicle Commission -- never saw this plan. This ranks right up there with removing the bike lane from Park Street in front of the new St Mary's building in favor of rush-hour car movements. That didn't come to PBMVC either.
