Bryan,

For security reasons, binc chroot's to the user's Maildir++ or IMAPdir depot directory. One of the effects is that symbolic links to files/directories outside of the depot directory cease to work.

On the positive side, binc properly handles concurrent access (enabling several instances of the imap server to access the same depot).

At this point, I don't think you can have shared folders in binc:-(

With regards to the shared folder situation, are there workarounds?
For example if I created a Maildir and symbolically linked it below the
IMAPdir for several users, would they then be able to access it and would
Binc deal with the concurrency issues, or would I end up with corruption due
to multiple people in the Maildir?

Thanks again for the help,

Hello,
Hello:-)

I'm new to the binc world but I plan to deploy it instead of courier imap on new mail server. I noticed that there seems to be two standards for the imap world the Maildir++ and the IMAPDir. I was hoping for some recommendations on which to use.

I prefer the IMAPdir depot becuase it has more rational semantics that
Maildir++. However, it also breaks with qmail convention for placement of
the default mailbox (namely ./IMAPdir/INBOX instead of ./Maildir). Thus,
if you need to keep ./Maildir then Maildir++ is probably the right choice
for you; if you do not have any legacy requirements to keep ./Maildir then
IMAPdir is probably the better choice.

Here are my requirements:

IMAP access will be via Outlook XP

No problem.

Users need to be able to create subfolders in their inbox

Creating subfolders of the INBOX is possible with both Maildir++ and
IMAPdir depots; IMAPdir depots also allow the creation of folders that
are NOT under INBOX.

I also need the capability of having "shared folders" , Maildirs that
multiple users use. We have kind of a call center type environment (on a
smaller scale) where we need mail to come into one folder and then
individuals will move it to their personal folder to claim ownership of
the
case. (It's mainly used for separating foreign language emails to the
people who speak them)

Shared folders are being considered for the next release of binc IMAP
(1.3); they are not implemented in the current release:-( If the last of
the bugs have been found in 1.2.3, then work will soon start on 1.3 (after
Andy gets back from vacation at the end of October).

This is a new install, we had an offsite email provider whose servers
have
gone crazy and so we are bringing it in house, so I also want to choose
the
most stable option.

binc IMAP is stable: I migrated from Courier a few months ago and have
been pleased (mind you I have a small user community).

So what should it be, Maildir++ or IMAPDir, and how do shared folders
work
in the respective one?

You have the facts: shared directories currently do not work in either.

Thanks for any assistance,

You're welcome,
Henry
