Except if the timeout is 30 minutes, the client won't re-open.  At least
Thunderbird doesn't.

TB unfortunately is not a mature candidate for an IMAP client, lacking much use of the protocol. I know this does not do you any good at the present. This does not occur with Mulberry or The Bat however, and the client opens at will.

Because it never closed before the relay-ctrl timeout happened.  So
they'd have to close their mail client and re-open it.  Which
is... sub-optimal :)

yes, agreed... I just told my users to make sure SMTP auth is set for pop before SMTP, and this has worked perfectly when using Binc, never had one complaint since I started using relay-ctrl and binc, last year I think. I have relay-ctrl set in both in my pop3 and binc run scripts.
