In my experience, the Free Speech argument is ALWAYS brought up in these situations when the person actually agrees with the message, but is too cowardly to say so.
I had a similar situation when I complained about the many, many homophobic (anti-gay, anti-lesbian, and anti-bi) articles being published in a local newspaper. I asked for a petition to be printed in which a number of prominent people in the community agreed implicitly with the statement "Let it be know that we, the undersigned, support our Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered..." The next thing you know, letters and comments are pouring in stating that I was against the Free Speech rights of the original authors. No mention was made of the hate-filled nature of the articles, nor of my Free Speech rights, only that I was somehow denying those folks their rights. I fail to see how expressing my OWN rights leads to denying others theirs. In fact, it does not. The truth is, the complaintants were simply implicitly agreeing with the hate, but couldn't bring themselves to actually state that. I guess one could see that as a piece of progress, albeit an infinitely small piece.
