Not necessarily.  .xinitrc is commonly used when you use 'startx' (ie no
graphical login manager).  .xsession is the default to be executed by
most login managers, but each may have their own settings to override
that.  .Xclients, IIRC, is executed by either the login manager or by
'startx' iff it exists and the other ones failed.

None of these files, however, has anything to do with setting the
background of the login screen - refer to the manual and documentation
of gdm for what files you need to modify for that.

You may have to clarify how this has anything to do with blackbox.
A search on google regarding xdm, gdm, kdm, wdm, xinitrc, xsession etc.
probably wouldn't hurt, either.

Unless, of course, you want to set the background for your blackbox
theme, in which case you probably should read the blackbox FAQ.
