The preferred method is to use ~/.xsession, which is very similar in format (I have
not found an exception, but I'm sure they exist) to ~/.xinitrc. ~/.xinitrc is only
called when you call xinit manually (from startx or another similar wrapper), whereas
most if not all graphical login managers (XDM, KDM, GDM, WDM) source .xsession.
