I wanted Blackbox, so I naively chose the Blackbox session, and since
by
default it always runs what you chose last time I had no reason to
change this, so it always ran the command for BlackBox, presumably
always by-passing the .Xclients file.
It never occured to me that I should choose "Default" if I wanted
BlackBox !! ;-) There is clearly scope for Mandrake to improve its
User Guide. Even the book on XFree86 for Linux fails to explain this.
