What if the menu is already black, or so dark that darkening it more
has little or no visible effect?  How is a darkening an indicator that
a menu is torn off?  Better to use something more obvious and
self-consistent, like close buttons on the titlebar.  Menus already
have titlebars, which afford being dragged around like other windows;
putting a close button there not only gives the indication that a
pinned menu is closable, but also directly and obviously provides the
means to do so.
