I would have probably hand-hacked my own ./configure script. That's what I
did with my dingOS userland distributions
(http://www.pointlessmovement.net/dingOS).

About the style plugin: my reason for calling it 'cumbersome' is that it
just seems faster for me to use a tree than a tabbed dialog (meaning, I
liked toolbox's interface better)
