Well, actually you can. I sometimes run W98 (yep, I got a license...stupid me), and as you can see on this picture here: http://zm.ormset.no/oo/galleri/stash/img_0564.jpg/view ..it is fully possible to run my external monitor at 640x480 with 256 colors while running my internal laptop monitor at it's 1400x1050, 16bit color.
