Interim reply here --

first, thank you for all the replies.

second, I'm using OS X 10.8.2, and had already re-downloaded and installed
Quicksilver beta 70 (I was already using it).

third, there *are* messages in Console -- I'm embarrassed I didn't look
there. On the first time I try to open an encrypted disk and get the
interaction I mentioned, there is this is in the log:

10/13/12 8:29:05.784 AM WindowServer[139]: CGXSetTrackingAreaEnabled :
Invalid tracking area 0x7f9672eb6a10
10/13/12 8:29:05.784 AM WindowServer[139]: CGXSetTrackingAreaEnabled :
Invalid tracking area 0x7f9672eddf60
10/13/12 8:29:05.785 AM WindowServer[139]: CGXSetTrackingAreaEnabled :
Invalid tracking area 0x7f9672e822a0
10/13/12 8:29:08.332 AM Dock[216]: no information back from LS about
running process

fourth, the problem goes away if I reset Quicksilver's preferences as you
described. If I restore the old preferences files it comes back. I
haven't done any investigation past this right now but wanted to give you
an update ... from here out I'll just re-add my plug-ins and change other
preferences until the problem comes back, and I'll report back when that
happens.

Thanks again!

Norm Aleks
