An update just in case someone happens to have the same problem sometime: I
found out that the cause of these hangs was Sophos Anti-virus.
Navigating into a folder with many pdfs causes quicksilver to request info
from the Spotlight index (Rob pointed out that this was new behavior since
version 70) and this apparently triggers Sophos to scan the files (if
real-time protection is enabled). At least that's the only reasonable
explanation, since I found out that everything is snappy if I turn the
anti-virus off.
