Maybe, if the spinning disk has time to go to sleep in between uses.
You could try some temporary experiments, like setting up a cron job to
access a file on the spinning disk every minute to keep it awake, or
unchecking “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” in the Energy
Saver preferences.
