Thanks for the suggestion, it didn't change anything though (fresh install 
and new user account).

That would work, but it would mean a lot of effort because every time I 
reorganised files or added a new folder to the desktop I'd have to change 
my Quicksilver settings. I'd like to drag folders to the Desktop and have 
them (and their contents, and *their* contents) be catalogued 
automatically. I understand that I'm using QS as a replacement for simple 
search queries, and that isn't exactly its intended purpose. Still, if I 
could actually suppress all unwanted file types--as is supposed to 
happen--it would solve everything for me.

I guess the other way to solve the problem would be if there was a way to 
get unrecognized file types to become recognized. Is there a master list 
somewhere that I could add file types to, so QS would treat .afm files the 
same way it treats .ttf files, and exclude them from the catalog when I ask 
it to?
