Same here - I keep hearing my fans coming on, and it isn't responding. In 
activity monitor it is steadily hogging cpu and memory - currently at 100% 
CPU and 3.29 Gb of memory and climbing 0.1Gb about every ten seconds. 
Again, this happened after the safari 2.3.1 update a few days ago. I keep 
having to kill it and restart it. It will behave for about 3 hours then 
start up again (not doing anything at all, just sitting in the background 
without being used).
