My memory failed me, which seems to be happening more and more
these days. :-)
It was the poppler package where I had read this:

Convert to use as much existing infra-structure as possible:
- drop t1lib entirely

So, it was the poppler package that wants (already has?) to drop
t1lib. Sorry for the confusion.
