Yes, because it breaks on non-Linux systems that don't have iconv(). But this
patch is absolutely required in order to make Windows-readable data CDs with
non-ASCII filenames if the locale is based on UTF-8. Even if you don't use
Nautilus CD burner.
And yes, you can't burn such CDs on Solaris, even though UTF-8 locales are
otherwise supported. For me, this makes Solaris a broken OS.
Therefore, I don't think it should go in the book proper. But then,
if there is no harm (another thing that concerns me) to any
application which may link to Shilly's static library (I have no
idea if any do) or use the tools, then perhaps we should consider
it.
All distros supply patched mkisofs. If an application that breaks because of
this patch, it will receive many bug reports from distro users. Therefore,it
can't live long in the unfixed state.
